St Helen Stonegate, York

One of the many city churches in the centre of York, St Helen's has ancient origins (possibly 8th century) as a site of Christian worship. The present building was largely reconstructed in 1857 by W H Dykes on earlier foundations, but incorporates the C14 south arcade and C16 north arcade. It is still open as an Anglican place of worship, though not on Sundays. Listed grade II* (list entry 1256800). The listing was written in 1954 and makes no mention of the post-war restoration of the church from 1955 onwards in which the organ was renewed, stained glass installed, and the chancel reordered in 1972.
