Ballengeich Cemetery, Stirling :: Shared Description

The cemetery opened in 1888 as an extension to the existing burial grounds ("The Old Town Cemetery") Link beside the Church of the Holy Rude, but it is not contiguous with them. It is separated from Stirling Castle by the Pass of Ballengeich, and it occupies the southwestern part of an area of high ground that was once collectively referred to as the Gowan Hills.

An information panel (present in 2018) near the main entrance relates that the cemetery opened in 1888, the first interment being that of a labourer's wife from the Raploch on the 11th of June of that year. There are 58 Commonwealth War Graves.

A still later extension of the Old Town Cemetery was the Snowden Cemetery Link which was created in 1924 beside the existing Old Town Cemetery.
