Moray Ploughing Match 2018
The event requires a large flat field so that all competitors can be allocated plots that are as nearly the same as possible.
There were 47 entries and 3 demonstrations.
The classes were Conventional, Conventional Lift Vintage, Reversible 2-Furrow, Reversible Multi-Furrow, and Vintage Trailing, with competitors from as far away as Fraserburgh and Laurencekirk.
Each competitor is allocated a plot to be ploughed, and has from 9.30 am until 2 pm to complete the task. Use of GPS or RTK is prohibited.
The judges then award points for a variety of aspects of ploughing: opening split/throw out, crown or feering, seed bed, uniformity, firmness, straightness, ins and out ends, and finish, not all of which I understand.
Even so, it's fascinating to watch the progress of a plot, and see the meticulous care taken by the competitors.
However it doesn't get the farmer's field ploughed for him. Because there are gaps between the plots, he has to re-plough the whole of the field before he can sow the next crop.
