Yeadon Methodist Church, Chapel Hill, Yeadon, Leeds

The last time I went for a walk around Yeadon to see what I could find I was lucky enough to be shown the clock in the town hall so I thought I would have another walk around to see what else there was to find. I thought I would start at the Town Hall as it was where I started and finished last time. I could see there was an old Methodist Church next to the Town Hall, so I went to have a look at that. Pretty much straight away I noticed two gravestones on the exterior wall of Yeadon Methodist Church one of the inscription reads: "To the memory of Betsy Sawyer, born in slavery in the island of Antigua, West Indies, who through missionary labour was brought to the knowledge and enjoyment of true religion and obtained her freedom whilst residing in the family of the Rev. T Murray in whose service she lived loved and respected for 16 years. She departed this life on November 24th 1839 aged 65 years in the faith and hope of the gospel. As a mark of affection for her this memorial stone was erected at the expense of her friends in the Methodist Society of this town," The death of Rev. Murray's daughter Sarah is also recorded on the memorial stone. Betsy who was a slave from Antigua, which was part of the British Empire. Slavery in the British Empire was abolished in 1807 but it was not until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 that the institution was finally abolished, but on a gradual basis. Since landowners in the British West Indies were losing their unpaid labourers, they received compensation totaling £20 million.
