Barassie Railway Station :: Shared Description

Barassie station was opened on 5 August 1839 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway. The station originally had four platforms; two on the main line to Ayr from Glasgow and two the Troon to Kilmarnock line. Both lines still exist and are in use for passenger services today, but no Kilmarnock services stop at Barassie. One of the Kilmarnock platforms still exists, but is not accessible and is not used. The Kilmarnock line is now single track only.

Three trains per hour each way serve Ayr and Glasgow on the Ayrshire line, which was electrified in 1986.

The station is at the north end of the 'Troon Loop' which serves the current Troon station. Part of the original line to Ayr survives as sidings immediately south of the station and can be seen from the platforms.

Also immediately south of the station is the site of Barassie railway works which was the principal carriage and wagon works of the Glasgow & South Western railway Company when it opened in 1901. The works had their own station. Spitfires were repaired there during WWII, when a temporary airstrip was opened for that purpose. The works employed 650 people at their peak and closed in the early 1970s. Virtually no trace remains today.
