Leicester Station Porte Cochere :: Shared Description

In response to the development of the Great Central Railway's new railway to London, the Midland Railway made major improvements to its important stations in Nottingham and Leicester.

At Leicester, a large porte cochere was constructed facing onto London Road. This was designed by Charles Trubshaw, the company's architect, and is constructed of red brick with buff terracotta dressings. Decorative panels above the main Arrival and Departure arches are in glazed faience. It is Listed Grade II. The parapet of the bridge on the opposite side of London Road is in the same materials, and clearly part of the project, but is not included in the Listing.

Unfortunately the use of inappropriate cleaning materials in the latter part of the 20th century, possibly including abrasives, has removed much of the fine surface layer of the terracotta and reduced the attractiveness of the material.
