West Midlands Metro extension to Birmingham Railway Station

The West Midlands Metro is building an extension to its Birmingham to Wolverhampton tramline. It diverts from the existing line just before the St. George's terminus. The route passes along Pipers Row, with a stop (actually two, one on each side of the road) near to the new Bus Station. It turns into Railway Drive, crosses the Ring Road (A4150) by a bridge and will terminate at a stop by the Railway Station.

The extension is expected to open at some point in 2020 once the rebuilding of the railway station is complete. There will be no overhead catenary wires as the trams will operate on the extension under battery power. The present terminus at St. George's will continue in use with alternate trams terminating at the railway station instead.
