The Glastonbury to Wells branch line

When this branch closed, as long ago as 1951, it was a branch off a branch (Evercreech Junc to Burnham-on-Sea) off a cross-country railway – the Somerset & Dorset from Bath to Bournemouth. However when opened as a broad gauge line in 1859 by the Somerset Central Rly it was the final section of its line from Burnham. That state of affairs didn’t last long as the SCR opened its mainline beyond Glastonbury to Evercreech & Cole in 1862 using standard gauge. At Cole it made an end-on junction with the Dorset Central Rly’s line to Templecombe & Poole. The 2 Companies merged to form the Somerset & Dorset Rly. The Wells branch remained broad gauge until 1868.

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.
