Bessbrook Society of Friends' Meeting House

The Richardson family of Wood House and Derrymore estates were prominent Quakers and many of those they employed in a supervisory capacity in their various enterprises were Quakers. This large meeting house set in oak woodland that belonged to the Wood House estate dates from 1864 and in its heyday it had an attendance of more than 250. Burials in the attached graveyard began in 1865 and there are now some 300 graves, though only about 50 are marked by grave stones. In accordance with Quaker tradition the stones are all of the same height and bear simple inscriptions.
