The Roman Catholic Cemetery in Great Yarmouth
This cemetery comprises about two acres of land, situated between Great Yarmouth and Caistor-on-Sea, and is accessed from Caistor Road which it adjoins in the east. The cemetery served the Catholic community of Great Yarmouth whose church, dedicated to St Mary, was founded by priests from the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and opened in September 1850. Altogether ten Fathers of the Society of Jesus were buried here from 1855 until 1940, and in 1867 a mortuary chapel (it later fell derelict and has since been demolished) was constructed at the end of the short access drive off Caistor Road.
The Jesuits stayed until 1962, when the care of the parish was handed over to the Diocese of Northampton. From 1972 until 1995, the parish was served by the Augustinian Friars, and by the clergy of the Diocese of East Anglia from 1995 onwards.
The cemetery is still in use and the new section is well kept. The older part is, however, overgrown with many of the graves being neglected and a number of gravestones and monuments damaged, some severely.
