Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker

The Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker is a former government-owned nuclear bunker.

During World War II a “Starfish site” LinkExternal link was established at Hack Green as a bombing decoy site to confuse Luftwaffe bombers looking for the vital railway junction at Crewe. In 1941, the station become RAF Hack Green, to protect the area between Birmingham and Liverpool from hostile attack and a ground-controlled interception (GCI) radar station was added. Hack Green was one of 21 fixed radar stations in the country and one of only 12 fully equipped with searchlights and fighter aircraft control. The site was modernised in the 1950s as part of the ROTOR project LinkExternal link. This included the provision of a substantial semi-sunk reinforced concrete bunker or blockhouse.

The station was closed in 1966, its role having been transferred to RAF Lindholme in south Yorkshire, and the site remained derelict until it was taken over in 1976 by the Home Office Emergency Planning Division who rebuilt and converted the R6 bunker as a Regional Government Headquarters (RGHQs) - one of a network of 17 such sites throughout the UK - designed to enable government to continue in the aftermath of a major nuclear attack on the UK. The regional HQ became operational in 1984.

The bunker was declassified in the early 1990s, following the end of the Cold War LinkExternal link . The Home Office abandoned its network of RGHQs and sold many of the sites; this one was bought by a private company and subsequently opened to the public in 1998 as a museum with a Cold War theme.
