Edward Burne-Jones Stained Glass Windows, St Martin's
This window was almost lost in the Second World War. In April 1941, the Bishop of Birmingham, Dr Erenest William Barnes, was angry as the church had not taken action to safeguard and preserve its items of historic importance. He ordered that the window be removed and placed in safe keeping. The window was packed in boxes waiting to be taken to the cellars of the College of Arts and Crafts in Margaret Street. That very night there was a bombing raid and this was the only window from the church to survive.
The window was erected in 1875, and is one of the earliest examples of the work of the pre-Raphaelite masters. Edward Burne-Jones was born in Birmingham on Bennett's Hill in 1833. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery contains numerous examples of his work, along with others by fellow members of the pre-Raphaelite movement. The museum and gallery holds the largest collection of pre-Raphaelite in the world.
