Harlech Castle :: Shared Description

Harlech Castle was built by Edward I between 1282 and 1289. It played a part in several wars over the next hundred years or so but remained in English hands. However it fell to Owain Glyndŵr forces in 1404 and became his residence and military headquarters for the remainder of his uprising. It was recaptured by the English in 1409.
During the Wars of the Roses, Harlech was held by the Lancastrians until the Yorkists captured it in 1468. The siege is the subject of the song "Men of Harlech".
The castle was held by the Royalists during the English Civil War and in 1647 it was the last Royalist castle to surrender to Parliament.
It is a Grade 1 listed building.
