Former Riddel's warehouse, Ann Street, Belfast
A disused former warehouse at 87-91 Ann Street, Belfast.
“An attached High Victorian four-storey seven-bay warehouse of c1865 in a terrace on Ann Street, designed by Thomas Jackson & Sons in polychrome brick fronting five stories of galleries supported on cast iron columns and beams, lit originally by a cast iron and glass roof” - part description on the NI Listed Buildings website.
Adjoining the police station, the property was acquired as a security measure and bricked-up. Externally it became an eyesore although recent photographs show the inside in a remarkable state of preservation and possibly (if not probably) unique in Belfast.
“One of the most remarkable survivals from industrial 19th century Belfast is the four-storey ironmongery warehouse built for John Riddel & Co in 1867 to the designs of Thomas Jackson. Behind its lively, polychromatic façade is a unique atrium with five stories of galleries supported by cast iron columns and heavy timber beams arranged round three sides of a glass-roofed courtyard” - Hearth Historic Buildings Trust website.
There is the following application (2 September 2019) for planning permission “LA04/2019/2134/LBC Masonry cleaning to principal (north) façade. Riddels warehouse 88-91 Ann Street Belfast”.
