Loch Lomond (Loch Laomainn)

Loch Lomond (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Laomainn - 'Lake of the Elms) is 22 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. Its area of 27½ square miles gives it the distinction of being the largest freshwater lake in Great Britain (in the UK, it is only surpassed by Lough Neagh and Lough Erne in Northern Ireland).

The loch crosses the Highland Boundary Fault which is often considered the boundary between the lowlands of Central Scotland and the Scottish Highlands. Its southern shores lie 14 miles northwest of Glasgow. The Loch forms part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park which was established in 2002.
