Edinburgh Doors Open Days 2019
I managed to visit four of the 149 locations open for the 2019 event organised by the Cockburn Association in Edinburgh and East Lothian:-
Granton Castle walled garden, West Shore Road, where volunteers are restoring the 15thC garden - a large area that has been neglected since 2005.
Georgian Antiques, Leith, a huge 4-storey redbrick, late-Victorian C-listed whisky warehouse. It has been used as an antique business since 1985, and is crammed with all sorts of antique furniture and related 'stuff'.
Lothian Buses Central Garage, Annandale Street. Built originally for the 1922 Industrial Exhibition, it became the home of Edinburgh Corporation Transport buses in 1926, with room for 108 buses, charabancs and city cars. Extended again in 1933 and 1963, it now houses 250 buses and the Head Office of the Lothian Group. It was a very popular Open Doors venue, especially with children and parents. There were bus tours around the depot and bus-washing plant, and a collection of old buses dating back to the 1920s.
Edinburgh Printmakers at Castle Mills. The recently opened studios and café in their new building - the restored North British Rubber Company head quarters at Fountainbridge.
