Shibden Hall

Shibden Hall is a grade II* listed building dating back to c1420. It was owned by a William Otes at that time. It was then in the hands of Saville and then the Waterhouse families and then (from c1615) the Listers. After the death of Anne Lister in 1840 it passed to her partner Ann Walker and after her death in 1854 back to the Listers. The Listers donated it to Halifax Corporation in 1933.
The Tudor half-timbered front of the house is its distinctive feature but many changes have been made to the hall. Anne Lister had a gothic tower and other improvements made to the house in the 1830s and many of the major features of the grounds were created at this time.
It is currently houses a museum and the estate is a public park.
