Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford :: Shared Description

The land for Undercliffe Cemetery was purchased in 1851 by five nonconformist businessmen for the Bradford Cemetery Company. The eastern side was used for nonconformist burials, the western side for Anglicans. It was used by many of the wealthiest families in Bradford during the 19th century.
The number of interments rose throughout the 19th century reaching a peak of 2466 in 1898. During the 20th century usage fell and in 1976 there were only 72 burials. The company went into liquidation in 1977.
The Friends of Undercliffe Cemetery was formed in 1980 to help save the site. In 1984 Bradford Council purchased the site. It is now run by a charitable company and is a conservation area.
