The Cup and Saucer, East Bierley

These stones, by the pond on Bierley Marsh, are older than 1379 but postdate the Norman Conquest. Their origin and original purpose is unknown. One theory is that they are a monument erected by the Lord of the Manor Sir Brian de Thornhill in memory of his servant Adam de Soureby in the mid-14th century. Another claims resemblance to Bradford's old Market Cross. Whatever the origin they have been used by locals as a meeting point and a location for religious services.
