Memorial to Heroes of the Marine Engine Room

This Grade II* listed memorial in St. Nicholas Place was erected in 1916 to commemorate the 32 engineers of the SS Titanic who remained at their posts to allow passengers to escape the sinking ship. After the First World War it was rededicated to all marine engine room fatalities.
Inscriptions on it read:
"THE BRAVE DO NOT DIE
THEIR DEEDS LIVE ON FOREVER
AND CALL UPON US
TO EMULATE THEIR COURAGE/ AND DEVOTION TO DUTY";
and:
"IN HONOUR OF
ALL HEROES OF THE
MARINE ENGINE ROOM
THIS MEMORIAL
WAS ERECTED BY
INTERNATIONAL SUBSCRIPTION
MCMXVI".
It was designed by William Goscombe John.
