Leven Festival Gardens
Originally laid out in 1950 Leven Festival Gardens lie within the Links Road, Leven Conservation Area which came into being on 8th May 1978. The gardens are in a slight hollow between the Promenade and Links Road and are bordered on their north-east side by Leven Beach Care Home and on their south-west side by Links Lane. There are four pedestrian entrances and the gardens are often used as a pleasant short-cut between Links Road and the Promenade. Leven Festival Gardens are also the location of two memorials to the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade which was formed in October 1941 at Largo House, Upper Largo under the command of General Stanislaw Sosabowski. On entering the garden from the Promenade the most striking sight is a memorial stone pillar. There is another, larger and newer, memorial stone close to the north-east entrance to the gardens. Both memorials mark the contribution that Polish Paratroopers made during WWII and in particular to the part they played in the Battle of Arnhem (Operation Market Garden) in September 1944.
