Coldside Hill Radio Station HF/DF tower base :: Shared Description

A High Frequency Direction Finding (HF/DF, or 'Huff-Duff') tower which would appear to be part of the Coldside Hill site, although about a kilometre north-east of the main distribution of buildings. Despite a thorough search of multiple sources, there appears to be no record of this particular HF/DF tower.

A 'preserved' HF/DF tower base exists at Shoreswood NT9346 : High Frequency Direction Finding (HF/DF) tower base, Shoreswood and there were three relatively close together at Habchester, near Lamberton Moor - see LinkExternal link Unfortunately, this last reference is under the title 'Orlit A Observation Post', which is incorrect. By my own calculations, this means that there were three HF/DF sites spanning the lower Tweed valley, with eight miles between Coldside Hill and Shoreswood and the same distance between Shoreswood and Habchester, the sites nearly being in a straight line, stretching north north-east from Coldside Hill. This would cover the approaches to three airfields - RAF Winfield, RAF Charterhall (Scotland) and RAF Milfield (England). Indeed, an interpretation panel at Shoreswood mentions two other HF/DF sites in the area. Yet another HF/DF site was near RAF Brunton, a satellite airfield of RAF Milfield, some 18 miles to the south-east. From contemporary aerial photography, it would appear there are still remains of the tower base.
