Church of St Peter and St Paul, Upton :: Shared Description

The church has 13th century origins, when it consisted of nave with north aisle and chancel. The north aisle was rebuilt during the 14th century, when the Bray chantry chapel was added, but the original aisle arcade was retained.

The windows on the south side were replaced mainly in the 14th century, in Decorated style, with a large 4-light Perpendicular window inserted in the 15th century. The south wall of the nave was completely rebuilt during the 1860s restoration, but the windows appear to be reused originals.

The tower was added complete in the 15th century and is a good example of the Perpendicular style with 3-light openings to the bell chamber. The tower has two distinctive features, the obvious one being the unusual large central pinnacle. The second is internal and is a columbarium (dovecote) in one of the upper chambers, one of only 9 surviving in England and Wales. It appears to have been created around 1700, the chamber having previously been a lodging, probably originally for the chantry priest attached to the Bray chantry.

The north porch was added during the 1860s restoration, the south door being removed at the same time.
