Wishbone Bridge - West Midlands Metro
As the route leaves Wolverhampton and heads down the A41 Bilston Road a gateway structure has been created by the Wishbone Bridge. Located at the crossover with the ring road the structure bridges a sunken pedestrian facility within the roundabout. The deck consists of two reinforced concrete elements either side of a split spine steel arch which rises out of their centre and transverses the deck to found on their extremity. The distinctive "wishbone" profile is thus created. A central line of hangers supports the deck which spans 40 metres in the arch span. A secondary 20 metre "back span" provides an aesthetic balance to the main span.
Steel struts from the central pier support the outer edge beam which contributes to the spanning structure under out of balance loading. The abutment of the arch is tied by a ground beam to the central pier in order to resist the arch thrusts effectively. The foundations to all three spine arch supports are bored piles with rock sockets formed in the underlying sandstone.
