Canal re-oxygenation in Stourport, June 2013
A large fire broke out at the Lawrence Road Recycling premises on Stourport Road, Kidderminster on Sunday, 16 June 2013. The fire was within large piles of baled up commercial and household waste including paper, cardboard and plastic. Enormous quantities of water were used in controlling the blaze, some of which flowed into and contaminated the nearby Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. This led to severely depleted oxygen levels, as low as 1% in some places, resulting in the Environment Agency deploying aerators to try and save many thousands of fish as far south as Stourport. Hundreds were moved to healthier water further north.
