The Old Parliament Building, Rhuddlan

The old parliament building, at the junction of High Street and Parliament Street, includes some of the remains of the building where King Edward I of England held a parliament in 1283. The Statute of Rhuddlan was formulated here and promulgated from the nearby castle in 1284. The statute introduced English Common Law into Wales (although retaining some aspects of existing Welsh legal practice) and created new counties in North Wales.

A stone plaque on its wall reads:

"THIS ...... IS THE REMAINS OF THE BUILDING WHERE KING EDWARD I HELD HIS PARLIAMENT A.D. 1283 IN WHICH WAS PASSED THE STATUTE OF RHUDDLAN SECURING TO THE PRINCIPALITY OF WALES ITS JUDICIAL RIGHTS AND INDEPENDENCE".
