Rhuddlan Castle

Rhuddlan Castle, in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, Wales was erected by Edward I between 1277 and 1282. Much of the work was overseen by the mason James of Saint George.
Rhuddlan is a concentric castle and has a unique diamond layout with the gatehouses placed at the corners of the square baileys instead of along the sides like other castles constructed in Wales by the English at the time. The castle had a three-sided moat with the River Clwyd on the fourth side. During the construction of the castle the river was straightened and dredged to allow ships to sail inland to allow provisions and troops to reach the castle when it was cut off by land.
