Wirral and Mersey Special – 22 October 1966

This was a railway enthusiasts' special train covering a variety of lines, many not normally used by passenger trains, in the south Lancashire and north Cheshire area. Starting from Liverpool Riverside Station, it proceeded via Aintree, Wigan, Manchester, Guide Bridge, Stockport, Northwich, Ellesmere Port, Birkenhead Docks, Chester, Runcorn and back to Liverpool (Central Station).

Motive power was provided by ex-LMS Fairburn 2-6-4 tank 42233 between Liverpool and Manchester Exchange, then BR standard 4-6-2 Britannia Class 70004 'William Shakespeare' to Birkenhead (Green Lane) and finally ex-LMS 2-6-0 42942 (“Crab” type) thence to Liverpool.

The tour was organised by the Liverpool University Public Transport Society.
