Bolling Hall, Bradford

Bolling Hall is Grade I listed as "the most substantial surviving [medieval building] in Bradford" (list entry 1299398). Originally two probably 14th century towers, enlarged c.1660 (see listing for more detail). It is now owned by Bradford Council and open to the public as a local history museum.

A note on the name: the hall is situated in the Bowling district of Bradford. Bolling was an ancient place name but the spelling had changed to Bowling by the 18th century, probably reflecting local pronunciation, although the hall retains the ancient spelling (see Wikipedia entry for a more detailed history). A similar change can be seen in the Forest of Bowland, still pronounced locally as 'bolland'.
