Hairdressers, hair stylists- maybe even barbers!

I’ve worn mine long, short and many lengths inbetween. And until the lockdown, I’d always taken the periodic act of “going for a haircut” for granted. The pandemic put paid to that so why has the head on our head been such an issue down the ages? I’m guessing our prehistoric ancestors had to find some way of keeping it out of their eyes long enough to hunt something to eat. Shorter hair on men has links to the military, dating back as far as the Roman era. Women, however, have tended to wear their hair long. I recall my own grandparents during the “swinging sixties” grumbling because it was no longer possible to tell what sex someone was from their hairstyle. Or put another way, I recall a pupil of mine saying Samuel Pepys had a “groovy hippyish” hairstyle! Which was probably a wig, hence the term hair dresser. As Dolly Parton once commented when asked “Who does your hair?”- I don’t know I’m not there. Nowadays of course top stylists are flown all over the world. But for those of us with more limited budgets there is still plenty of choice. My dad, somewhat of a traditionalist, will not go anywhere unless it is quite unequivocally a barbers, preferably with a red and white pole. Which is of course quite illogical as he has neither a beard or a wound that needs dressing…
