Wroxall Abbey is a group of very interesting buildings spanning many centuries. The so-called 'Abbey' itself was in fact never such a thing - starting life as a grand country house built in 1866 by Walter Scott of Liverpool for James Dugdale. It then became a school from the 1930s for over fifty years. Now it is a hotel and spa (see their own website: Link ) set in fine extensive grounds. Within these grounds are the ruins of St Leonard's Priory a Benedictine nunnery founded in c.1141 on lands donated by Hugh Fitz Richard, Lord of Hatton. It was dissolved in 1536 and the site of the nunnery was granted to Robert Burgoyne and John Scudamore in 1544.
The church, also dedicated to St Leonard was consecrated in 1315 while the priory was still operational.
