The not so humble takeaway

The earliest example of a takeaway was the Roman thermopolium. The ruins of Pompeii show us that these served ready-made hot food to the plebians who didn’t have their own kitchens. Fast forward to 1899 and the first pizza delivery round in Naples. Then in early 20th century Mahadeo Havaji Bachche saw workers in Mumbai unable to leave their job at lunchtime, and began his dabbawala service: a 'take-to' variant! Until the 1960s the only British takeaway staple was the fish and chip shop. Then, however, immigrants from Bangledesh and Hong Kong began to open outlets in our towns and cities. Then came the internet and companies such as Deliveroo and of course, Trip Advisor! Suddenly everyone had to up their game
