Wheelie bins

Prehistoric paintings of crude wheeled boxes have been found drawn in Himalayan caves. There is also evidence of wheeled refuse receptacles at Pompeii. In 1935, George Dempster designed, created and distributed the ‘Dempster Dumpster’ -the first large-scale waste container that could be mechanically emptied into the back of a rubbish collection truck. The modern wheelie bin design, as we know it today, was created by Frank Rotherham Mouldings, a company in Slough in 1968. At first these were used to transport waste from one corner of the factory to the other. A visiting health and safety inspector showed an interest in the bins- he knew that dustmen typically suffered from back injuries due to the awkward and very heavy bins they had to carry. By the late 1980’s, the standard wheelie bin that we know and love was the industry standard.
