Youth Clubs
Somehow it became a metaphor for juvenile delinquency, one many people seem ready to demonise. Even the Kray Brothers had a tame priest from their East End youth club to speak up for them when they were in trouble. Agatha Christie also tended to depict them in an unfavourable light. But for many, they were that first chance to go somewhere less formal than school or church and just "hang out".
