Not so long ago I heard someone on Radio Four lamenting the death of the hobby, as in pastime. It is true I know no-one who collects stamps or coins, makes model aeroplanes or keeps budgerigars. But every day millions of people go to a café. Far more than read a newspaper or listen to the news. And why not? A few minutes spent sipping a soothing beverage with a nice slice of toast or a sticky cake seems so English, so ubiquitous that one hopes those new fangled home delivery services will not force them onto the defensive. Surely-surely- human beings were meant to go out, meet people and have a chat. The new hobby is....
