And I speak as someone who has had some very nice ones. A 5,000 Sumerian text attributed dental decay to tooth worms! Hippocrates mentions the treating of decaying teeth, but it wasn’t until 1530 that the first book entirely devoted to dentistry was published. In 1723, Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon credited as the Father of Modern Dentistry invented the filling. He also proved that acids from sugar led to tooth decay. In 1840, the first dental college opened in Baltimore. By 1873, Colgate had mass produced the first toothpaste, and mass-produced toothbrushes followed a few years later. In 1948 the NHS was created with the ideal of free dental care for all, although that has now been partially eroded (no pun intended!).
