Landing craft timber loading facility at Loch Striven
The facility was created to enable timber to be extracted from Allt Daraich forest by sea rather than by road. As the name of the facility suggests, landing craft style boats will berth here to be loaded with felled timber, most likely to be taken to the timber handling facility at Troon harbour. It is estimated that 70,000 tonnes of timber will be extracted by this means over a 15 year period.
A level area of crushed stone around 75m X 30m has been cut out of the bedrock to form a parking/staging area. This is served by a short access road from the adjacent minor road to the 10Km distant Colintraive ferry. A concrete ramp leads from this area into the loch, for the berthing of the landing craft.
A second new access road winds steeply up the hill into Allt Daraich forest on the other side of the minor road.
A notice at the site states that construction of the facility was supported by the Scottish Government's Strategic Timber Transport Scheme (STTS) in cooperation with the forest owners and other private companies.
