Wakefield Westgate railway station

The first Westgate station, south of the main road, was opened in 1856 by the Great Northern Railway. It was replaced in 1867 by one on the north side of Westgate, a joint project by the GNR, Midland and Manchester, and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways. It had a clock tower that was demolished along with most of the station buildings in 1967. The remainder of the station was rebuilt in 2013 with a new entrance and station building north of the old entrance.

Westgate is served by main line trains between London and Leeds (as of 2022 operated by LNER), Cross-Country services between the North-East and South coast via Leeds, and local trains to Doncaster and Sheffield. There are only two through platforms, plus some stabling sidings to the north. There is a link chord to Kirkgate station that at one time was used by trains to Huddersfield, but with no current regular passenger service.

The station was judged Best Large Station of the Year at the National Rail Awards 2021, although with only two platforms the criterion of 'large' was probably one of footfall rather than physical size.
