The Manchester Grammar School

The boys' grammar school, always known locally as MGS, dates as an institution from 1515 and its foundation is most closely associated with Hugh Oldham, Bishop of Exeter. It has always been a day, rather than boarding, establishment, most pupils coming from the Manchester area. It is often rated as among the best independent schools for academic achievement.

The original buildings were on Long Millgate close to the parish church (later Cathedral). The present buildings in Rusholme were erected c.1930 on the site of Birch Hall and Farm, in order to expand the school's size, move to a healthier area away from city smogs, and provide sporting facilities.

After a period as a 'direct grant' school in the 1960s/70s, it is again an independent fee-paying school, and now takes boys from the age of 7 upwards with a junior school on site. The school celebrated its quincentenary in 2015 with the launch of a bursary appeal, aiming to ensure that pupils continue to be selected on academic potential rather than parents' ability to pay.

The photos dated 7 May 2022 were taken on a school reunion and permission has been received from the school for their release under the CC licence.
