Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2022

There has been a new summer tea pavilion each year (except 2020) since 2000. This is "Black Chapel" designed by Chicago artist Theaster Gates with architectural support of Adjaye Associates. The cylindrical shape echos various types of kiln and mud hut. The interior is mainly black, relieved by some aluminium panels smeared with tar to form art works. The cafe servery is behind a black wall extending from door to door to the full height of the interior. Light is from the two doors and an oculus in the centre of the roof.
