Carlile Place Footbridge

The bridge is a Scherzer type Bascule bridge and is one of two that were built across the river in the early part of the Twentieith Century, the other being the road 'swing bridge' downstream at Renfrew. These are the only Scherzer type bridges in the West of Scotland and both were built by William Arrol of Glasgow. The Carlile Place bridge opened in 1911 and the Renfrew bridge in 1923.

The operating mechanism and part of the steelwork were removed for scrap during WWII, around 1942, after navigation above this point of the river ceased. The bridge then closed completely in 1997 due to its being in an unsafe state of repair.

It was reopened in November 2021 following extensive renovation by W I & A Gilbert Ltd, which was funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and Sustrans Ltd as part of a wider scheme to encourage active transport between Paisley Town Centre, Glasgow Airport and the new AMIDS development to the east of the airport.

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.

For example, you can create a generic description for an object shown in a photo, and reuse the description on all photos of the object. All descriptions are public and shared between contributors, i.e. you can reuse a description created by others, just as they can use yours.
