Queen Victoria statue
'This statue of
Queen Victoria
was erected
by her loyal subjects
in commemoration of
the completion of 59 years
of her Majesty's happy reign
1887'
This over-life sized statue appears more imperious and the height accentuated by the length of the robes. The City Council had decided to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee with a statue. A committee was formed which included local painter Benjamin Williams Leader and funds were collected through subscription. Worcester born sculptor Thomas Brock was chosen to execute the work and it was unveiled on 6 November 1890. Brock later went on to create a larger version for Victoria Square in Birmingham; it was unveiled in Birmingham (the present statue in Birmingham was recast in bronze by William Bloye in 1951) on the 10 January 1901, just 12 days before Queen Victoria's death. Brock also executed statues of Victoria for Capetown and Lucknow. Brock’s most famous piece of work is the Victoria Memorial at the end of the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
