Pebblebed Heath
The Pebblebed Heaths represent a large block of lowland heath in Devon, and form part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As a rare and threatened habitat, lowland heathland is a particular focus for nature conservation in Britain, which holds about 20% of the lowland heath in Europe. Link
The heaths form on acidic, nutrient-poor soils. On the Pebblebed Heaths these are formed from rocks of the Chester Formation, a sequence of red sandstones with layers of pebble gravel derived from a large Triassic river system which flowed northwards across southern England and the Midlands Link
