Church of St Mary, Bishophill Junior, York
One of many ancient churches in York, this one on the south side of the river has Saxon and Norman origins that are still evident in the construction, and even contains obviously re-used Roman stones and tiles. It is still open for worship, both by Church of England and Greek Orthodox congregations, making the tower base at least "the oldest space continually used for Christian worship in York" according to the church's own history leaflet.
The leaflet also points out some of its other interesting features, including the tower (lower part 10th century, upper part 11th), early 12th century nave with 14th century arcade and side aisles, fragments of Saxon crosses, medieval font and bells, and 20th century furnishings by Temple Moore.
