The Phoenix pub, York

The pub on George Street dates either from the late 18th century (Historic England) or 1830s (CAMRA) but they agree it was remodelled in 1897 for John Smith's. Grade II listed (list entry 1257774) and on CAMRA's regional inventory of historic pub interiors.

An old photo inside the pub has a caption giving its original name as the Labour in Vain (presumably from Psalm 127:1) and the later name came from the nearby Phoenix Iron Foundry (now Ancroft Close). Historic England note it as 'the last surviving pub inside the City walls which served the cattle market, held within Fishergate Bar until 1827'.

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.

For example, you can create a generic description for an object shown in a photo, and reuse the description on all photos of the object. All descriptions are public and shared between contributors, i.e. you can reuse a description created by others, just as they can use yours.
