Shops and other businesses in Crossgates
When the railway came to Cross Gates (as it was then spelled) in 1834 it essentially served the nearby village of Whitkirk to the south, and Cross Gates was only a few houses on the road north to Seacroft. Even by the end of the 19th century, Cross Gates was no more than a small mining village on the boundary of Leeds and Tadcaster, with a Methodist church and a few rows of houses. Rapid expansion of the city eastwards in the 1930s brought suburban development to the area north and west of the station. With the opening of the Arndale Centre in 1967 (allegedly the first 'American-style' mall in England, currently called the Crossgates Shopping Centre) the village became the major retail focus for a wide area of east Leeds.
