The Royal Scotsman passing through Glasgow
The City Union Line is used to facilitate this movement from the north of the river to the south. This line is not used for regular passenger services. It is mainly used for empty stock movements between railway depots on opposite sides of the Clyde, engineering trains and occasional freight trains.
Opened in the 1860s, the line runs between Shields Junction in the south west of the city and Cowlairs Junction in the north. The route includes the first railway bridge to be built across the Clyde in the centre of Glasgow.
The line is elevated most of the way through the city centre by means of arches and road bridges. It skirts past the East End and Glasgow Cross before crossing over the Clyde to the Gorbals, where it turns gradually west.
