St Christopher's Church, Gunnerton

St Christopher's was the first church to be designed by John Hawes (1876-1956), architect, missionary and priest. John Hawes went on to design a number of churches in West Australia and the West Indies and was, after conversion to Catholicism, granted the title of Monsignor for his architectural work.

The Church was built 1899-1901 in the Arts and Crafts style with half-boarded wall and boarded ceiling. The church incorporates a number of distinctive features including carved oak panels by local craftsmen along the west wall, and a marble altar. The original circular west window was replaced in the 1970s by the present striking design by William Tillyer FRSA. During the latter part of the 20th century, the Church fell into a state of some disrepair but was renovated at the beginning of this century, for which the architect Vincente Stienlet won the Hadrian Award in 2007.

Prior to 2007, the building had fallen into disrepair. Vincente Stienlet was commissioned to sensitively restore the Grade II listed church to its former glory, but also create a community facility for social, education and leisure activities.
