Access Improvements At Port Glasgow Railway Station

See a slideshow of all photos in this set Link

Port Glasgow station is on the Inverclyde Line which runs from Glasgow Central (20 miles distant) to the Firth of Clyde ferry terminals at Gourock and Wemyss Bay. It is frequently the busiest station in Inverclyde, based on annual passenger use (occasionally Gourock is busier) and is the only one of the thirteen stations in the district which is served by all trains.

Built in 1844 by the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway, the station was rebuilt between the World Wars and the old footbridge possibly dates from that time. The station's location on the side of a steep hill, with a 10m high cliff hard against the west-bound platform means that step-free access has not been possible until now (2023).

Groundworks under a £5M project were started in February 2023 to provide step-free access at the main entrance on Princes Street. Work to construct a new footbridge with lifts started around the same time, with the bridge being formally opened on December 9th 2023. This new bridge provides step-free access between the platforms, as well as to the Park & Ride car park on Highholm Avenue and to Princes Street via Willison's Lane.

Work to remove the old footbridge commenced in January 2024.
