2024 Geograph AGM and Summer Meet
The formal AGM was held on Friday 21st June 2024 at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. The room provided was excellent, on the first floor with panoramic views of Llandudno Bay.
Before the formal meeting, members attending enjoyed two excellent presentations.
Firstly, Judith Phillips, Trustee of Amgueddfa Llandudno Museum and Gallery, informed us how Llandudno is much more than a Victorian seaside resort, with important prehistoric sites dating back some 13,000 years.
Following this, our Patron, Mike Parker entertained us with an illustrated discourse on 'Borders', covering how the geography of borders impacts on people and cultures.
After the AGM, Venue Cymru provided us with an excellent lunch.
In the afternoon there was a guided walk around the Great Orme, led by Neil Johnstone, a local Blue Badge guide. Starting at the summit hotel, the route took the party down to the Marine Drive on the south side before climbing again round the west end of the headland and back up to the summit. A good walk but a bit challenging in places to less agile members!
The suggested meet-up for the evening meal at Gwesty Links Hotel was well attended, so overall there was plenty of opportunity for members to get (re-)acquainted.
On the Saturday, the one organised event was a morning walk up to the top of Bryn Euryn, between Llandudno and Colwyn Bay. Although not the highest summit in the area, there are fine panoramic views of the coast and the uplands of Snowdonia. The hill is a designated nature reserve with woodland and grassland, and also includes the ruins of an important medieval manor house, Llys Euryn. The walk provided more than sufficient exercise to create an appetite for a good lunch at Hickory's at the bottom of the hill.
Although some light rain had been predicted for some of the time, it avoided any of the planned activities and there was sunshine for much of the time. Overall, a most enjoyable weekend.
